A predecessor company to AmSurg was in the business of consulting with physicians in the development, licensing and Medicare certification of single specialty, practice-based outpatient or ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). Repeatedly, those physicians voiced the desire for a company to be their business partner, risk partner and financial partner. That idea was the genesis of AmSurg, the pioneer in the single specialty surgery center concept. AmSurg was founded in 1992 to develop, acquire and manage single specialty ASCs in partnership with surgical and other group physician practices. American Healthcorp, Inc. (now known as Healthways, Inc.) and a group of private Nashville investors originally funded the company.

In December of 1997, American Healthcorp spun-off AmSurg as its own public company. In each of the years since we became publicly held, we have achieved substantial and consistent growth in revenues, cash flow, earnings per share and same-center revenues.
