AMSURG partner John Hong, M.D., United Surgery Center of Murrieta, Calif., explained a new weight loss surgery option to help obese patients lose weight and keep it off.

“Recently the FDA did approve a new device that is at least three times as effective in terms of overcoming obesity as just diet and exercise alone,” Hong said. “That is called the endoscopic placement of the intragastric balloon, which is essentially a non-invasive means by which the stomach can be made to feel full and by doing so, it helps to reprogram the brain in terms of signaling to the rest of the body that one needs to eat less.”

The average weight loss is 20 to 40 pounds over a period of six months.
