By FMC Project CoordinatorMary Vongsaga TheHealthcare Design Conference focuses on the impact environmental design can have on_ the safety, operation, clinical outcomes and the financial success of health care facilities. With nearly 4000 participants at last year’s conference, the Healthcare Design Conference offered me the opportunity to connect with professionals from all fields involved in health care through educational seminars, presentations and networking.  Because the conference is not just about design, rather sustainability, operational discussions, and facility outcomes, among other topics, it provided inspiration and visibility into what the world is doing in health care and allowed me to see beyond the work we are doing currently and bring those successful trends and research back to AMSURG and our centers.   This year’s conference was held at theGaylord Palms in Orlando, Fla and offered sessions including “The Ambulatory Care Mission,” “The Hospital ICONS Program” and  “Design Research Informs Furniture & Art Selection,” all of which I attended. There was time set aside to meet one-on-one with a selection of vendors in the health care industry, and this was a good opportunity for attendees to talk to representatives they may not have been exposed to otherwise.  There was also an Exhibit Hall open every day after the sessions, providing access to several vendor products and services I found interesting for our centers, including furniture, wall protection, paint, flooring, window treatments and fabrics.   Throughout the conference, there were ample opportunities to network with industry peers including architects, designers, facility managers and nurses.  I met several professionals who gave valuable insight on the health care industry as a whole: architects in different areas of the country we could use to build/relocate our centers, facility managers who have experience with what works and what doesn’t in facilities, and vendors with products/services AMSURG may not have considered before.   Overall the Healthcare Design Conference was a great experience that I hope to be able to have again. _
