New Study Says Choosing ASCs Saves $38 Billion Annually

Money with band-aid and stethascope, close up.

A new study based on private health insurance claims data has found that:

  • Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) reduce outpatient surgery costs by $38 billion each year with lower prices for the same procedures performed in higher cost settings
  • Commercially insured patients save more than $5 billion per year in out-of-pocket costs with lower deductible and coinsurance payments at ASCs
  • Additional commercial insurance savings (estimated at up to $41 billion annually) could occur if more procedures commonly performed at ASCs were shifted to ASCs from higher cost settings

Healthcare Bluebook and HealthSmart conducted the study with assistance from the ASC Association.
