High-Quality Ambulatory Alternative Allows Patients to Heal in the Comfort of their Own Home at 40-60 Percent Lower Cost
WALTHAM, MA – On Wednesday, August 23, Atrius Health doctors performed the first-ever total hip replacement surgery to occur in a Massachusetts free-standing ambulatory surgery center. The procedure was conducted by Dr. James Phillips and assisted by Dr. Georges Almacari at Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites in Waltham. The new procedure enabled the patient to return home later in the day and recover with ongoing support from a dedicated team of home healthcare nurses and physical therapists. Wednesday’s procedure follows Atrius Health’s completion of the first freestanding ambulatory total joint replacement in Massachusetts – a knee replacement, also performed at Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites.
“Hip replacements are becoming increasingly common in Massachusetts and across the country, and performing these surgeries in the ambulatory setting presents appropriate patients with a convenient alternative to the hospital at a lower cost,” said Dr. Louis Bley, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Atrius Health. “We have a wonderful partner in Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites as our teams collaborate to provide coordinated care that serves patients at every step before, during and after surgery. Together we look forward to helping more people recover from these procedures comfortably at home where they want to be.”
The hip replacement procedure performed at Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites is virtually identical to those performed in a hospital. However, instead of the traditional several-day hospital stay, patients recover in the comfort of their homes with care provided in the home.
“By customizing care to meet the unique needs of each patient, we are delighted to offer a ‘less disruptive’ recovery for hip replacements,” said Greg DeConciliis, PA, Administrator of Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites and President of the Massachusetts Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. “Our personalized clinical care plan for each patient along with our dedicated team of healthcare professionals help patients return home sooner for a smoother and more comfortable recovery.”
Free-standing surgery centers provide patients the same quality care as hospitals, but offer significant cost savings. Hip replacements in the Boston area typically cost about $35,000 in inpatient facilities, whereas free-standing outpatient surgery centers may provide these procedures at a 40 to 60 percent lesser cost. All three of Boston’s local commercial insurers have approved payments for patients participating in this program at Boston Out-Patient Surgical Suites.
“Patients benefit from significantly lower co-payments and overall costs of care, because an ambulatory surgery center does not have the significant overhead of a larger in-patient hospital. As patients navigate the high deductibles of today’s healthcare plans, it is essential to provide high-quality care at a more affordable price,” DeConciliis added.
Outpatient total joint replacements are performed regularly in many parts of the country, and in addition to cost savings typically result in higher overall patient satisfaction. According to CDC-NHSN data, patients also experience lower rates of infection after outpatient surgery as opposed to the inpatient setting.
