A new study based on private health insurance claims data has found that:
- Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) reduce outpatient surgery costs by $38 billion each year with lower prices for the same procedures performed in higher cost settings
- Commercially insured patients save more than $5 billion per year in out-of-pocket costs with lower deductible and coinsurance payments at ASCs
- Additional commercial insurance savings (estimated at up to $41 billion annually) could occur if more procedures commonly performed at ASCs were shifted to ASCs from higher cost settings
